second Grade Curriculum
Reading/Language arts
Reading/Writing Workshop, Words Their Way, Fountas and Pennill Benchmark Assessment, Zaner-Bloser Handwriting
Our Language Arts curriculum emphasizes meeting the students needs at their own level. Students are assessed by Fountas and Pennill Benchmark Assessments in the beginning of the year. After whole group lessons, they work on their Language Arts skills daily using the Reading/Writing Workshop model. They meet weekly with their teachers to focus on specific skills and check in with their levels. Additional reading, writing, and speaking experiences happen on a daily basis. Our Trucker Buddy, SSND pen pal, Lifebooks, DEAR time, presentations, and Mass participation are just a few areas that make Language Arts meaningful.

Math
Sadlier-Oxford "Progress in Mathematics"
Our Math curriculum emphasizes numbers/operations, 2-Digit addition and subtraction, money, time, data, geometry, measurement, and exploring greater numbers. We use many math games, especially using dice and playing cards, to create a fun learning environment. Number games are always a fun way to work on our skills. Online programs such as IXL Math, Prodigy, and ABCYa also contribute to our curriculum.

Religion
Blest Are We "Faith in Action"
Our Religion curriculum centers around receiving First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion. We discuss how our faith and the sacraments affect our daily lives, and how receiving the sacraments changes us. While our curriculum centers around the sacraments, students of any faith are included in our discussions and activities. See the Sacraments tab for further information on Reconciliation and Communion.

Social Studies
Harcourt "People We Know"
Our Social Studies curriculum includes geography, government, economics, and history. We use current events and topics from other curriculum areas to create discussion in the classroom. We also have the unique experiences of Junior Achievement and Picturing America to further our Social Studies curriculum. At the end of the school year, the Second Grade traditionally presents a play based on a topic that was covered in class.
